Greetings. I am Michael Wood. I am born and bred in Sheffield, South Yorkshire and have worked as a journalist and a proofreader. I am now a writer of crime fiction novels and a reviewer of books for CrimeSquad.com a website dedicated to showcasing the best crime fiction has to offer. So, not only do I write crime fiction, but I read crime fiction, for work and for pleasure.
So, why Sheffield? Well, Brighton has Peter James, Norfolk has Elly Griffiths, London has Mark Billingham. Sheffield needed a place on the UK literary map.
I have always wanted to write ever since I was a child when I had to write a short story for an English class. The teacher told my mum to not let me write again as I scared her. Wimp. Fortunately, I didn't listen to her (I rarely did) and I continued to write. I did change genre, however. I wrote a comedy script and sent it to the BBC. Bless them, they sent me a lovely rejection letter despite the script being awful. I wrote another script and they said, as I writer, I showed potential. How nice.
As a huge reader of crime fiction I decided to follow in the footsteps of my favourite authors, Minette Walters, Val McDermid and Reginald Hill. The first couple of novels I wrote were thrown on the fire, even I could see they were poor. However, I kept going and I came up with FOR REASONS UNKNOWN. However, it was lacking two key ingrediants - an interesting protagonist and a realistic setting. Enter DCI Matilda Darke. Enter Sheffield and so begins the series. That's it. That's the story of me.
